Fadjar I. Thufail is a graduate student in Anthropology. Besides pursuing his doctorate at UW-Madison, Fadjar Thufail is also a researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Science in Jakarta. His main focus of study is the anthropology of violence and riot. He is also interested in the topics of public sphere, narrative, and cultural politics. He is currently conducting research on the “anti-Chinese” riots that took place in Indonesia in May 1998. In his Ph.D. thesis, Fadjar Thufail will explore how ethnographic approach can help shed light on the complexity of the violent event. He is interested in finding out how acts of violence is used used by perpetrators and victims of the riots to negotiate confusion and anxiety that they encounter during the recent political transition in Indonesia. In August 2001, Fadjar Thufail will participate in a conference “Interrogating Reconciliation” held in Manila and sponsored by the UW-Madison’s Legacies of Authoritarian project.
