2014 SKJ Fellow
Marta-Laura Suska is a third year doctoral student in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focussed on urban violence and preventive policies in Brazil, specifically the Pacification Police Unit in Rio de Janeiro and the Pact for Life in Recife. Before coming to UW Madison, Marta did her Master of Philosophy in Latin American Studies at the University of Oxford. Prior to entering graduate school, Marta worked at a Brazilian NGO for Digital Inclusion in favelas, prisons, and mental health institutions in Rio de Janeiro. This experience has shaped her interest in urban violence, inequality, and police-favela relationships. Thanks to the SKJ fellowship, Marta will intern at the NGO Igarapé in Rio de Janeiro, where she will work on the development of a Child Security Index (CSI). The CSI is a diagnostic tool that spatially maps how children experience violence in favelas, aiming to prevent violence against children in fragile and conflict affected settings.
