Tyrone Siren is a graduate student studying the countries of Cambodia and Thailand in the department of Anthropology. In particular, Tyrone’s project concerns the development of “international casinos” that Thai businessmen own but operate in the border areas of Cambodia, rather than in Thailand (where gambling is illegal). Making the project doubly complex, many of the casinos are located in border regions still controlled by Khmer Rouge guerrillas. Tyrone hopes to explore how political legacies of the past, international capital and the indigenous culture of Vietnamese and Thai border people relate to one another in this highly contentious space.
