Madelaine L’Esperance is a doctoral student in the Consumer Science department. She completed her undergraduate degree in Economics and Finance at Loyola University Chicago in 2014. Her research interests include family economics, social policy, intergenerational mobility, and gender. Madelaine will work with Innovations for Poverty Action Peru this summer evaluating a branchless banking agent network in rural Peru and its impact on household consumption and saving patterns for beneficiaries of the Juntos conditional cash transfer program. Ultimately, she would like to explore whether the cash transfer, financial management services, and financial literacy education empower women, alter intra household distribution of resources, and potentially transform gender roles within the household.
