2004 SKJ Fellow
Mark Kramer is a graduate student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications with a focus in International Journalism. He works as a freelance writer for La Comunidad, a Latino newspaper in Madison, as well as other publications and organizations. He has lived and worked in Africa and Asia, the Appalachian foothills of eastern Kentucky, and, among other places, Luxembourg where he spent a semester studying abroad. Mark has conducted research in urban centers of several developing countries with a particular interest in land rights, the informal sector, and in gathering stories from these contexts to share with an American reading audience: foremost, his desire is to convey stories from people and places generally left unempowered to share their own stories. Through various agencies including Servant Partners and the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, Mark will conduct research in Manila, Philippines, where he will interview and live with residents of a slum community to augment his previous research.
Mark’s post-fellowship report is available here.
