Ming Hu is a PhD student in Civil Society and Community Research at School of Human Ecology. His research interests include civic engagement, nonprofit management, and philanthropy. With the Scott Kloeck-Jenson predissertation travel grant, Ming will travel to China to explore why and how Chinese youth are engaged in community well-being (like environmental equality, labor rights, poverty, gender equality, etc.) with nonprofit community-based organizations, and how their engagement impact their agency, identity development, and future aspiration in a post-communist country. Ming earned his BA degree in Economics and first MA degree in Agricultural Economics in China, and a second MA degree in Philanthropic Studies at Indiana University. As a nonprofit professional, he worked with several nonprofit organizations in China and the United States in the fields of rural poverty alleviation, disaster management, capacity building, and immigrant aid.
