2016 SKJ Fellow
Etienne Fluet-Chouinard grew up in Ottawa, Canada, and is currently pursuing his doctoral studies in freshwater ecology at the Center for Limnology of UW-Madison. Etienne’s doctoral research investigates different aspects of the interactions between anthropogenic activities and freshwater ecosystems at the global scale. During the summer 2016, he will be carrying out a Scott Kloeck-Jenson International Internship as part of his dissertation work on global inland fisheries. Etienne will be hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the agency of the United Nations designated to fight hunger worldwide, in their headquarters in Rome, Italy. Through collaboration with FAO experts, he hopes to tackle the issue of underestimation of global inland fish catches by official statistics which are critical for the subsistence and livelihood of many populations. By addressing data deficiencies with statistical models, Etienne hopes to generate more reliable estimates of inland fish catch to promote the responsible and sustainable management of the fish resource.
