Scott Carney is a graduate student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before pursuing graduate studies he was the Senior Editor of Manhattan Style magazine. His freelance writing can be found in Fodor’s Travel Guides, India Today and Shout NY. Scott is an active member of the South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA). This summer Scott will intern with India’s third largest newspaper, the Hindustan Times, in Jaipur. He intends to use the Scott Kloeck-Jenson award to further his research on the influences of mass-media on India’s emerging youth culture. In his dissertation, Scott will begin a longitudinal study that examines the ways in which print and broadcast media target and construct youth sentiments. He will structure his fieldwork to target both the production and reception of mass media. He expects to conduct fieldwork among middle-class students attending Rajasthani University and in media production centers in Jaipur and Bombay. Scott is a two time recipient of the Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS).
