Address:
2005 SKJ Fellow

Dixie Beadle is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Theatre and Drama with a certificate in African Studies. Her research focuses on theatres of North and sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, Dixie is interested in the ways in which theatre groups seek to influence the social and political landscapes of the post-independent African nation. The Ndere Troupe with which she will intern has been a part of the AIDS education movement in Uganda that has played an important role in reducing the numbers of new HIV patients. The troupe has also conducted drama workshops with high school students in order to empower them to take charge of their education. Dixie’s Scott Kloeck-Jenson award will help her internship with the Ndere Troupe, which will allow her to learn about their theatrical techniques used to engage their audiences in questioning and reassessing problematic social and political practices.
