IRIS NRC is dedicated to advancing international journalism on the UW-Madison campus and beyond by promoting the work of student journalists and engagement with contemporary global issues. As the primary partner in the UW-Madison Pulitzer Center Campus Consortium, IRIS NRC collaborates to host workshops, journalist residencies, and skills training for emerging student journalists.
Past initiatives have featured international journalists like Jacob Kushner, Jason Motlagh, and Erica Ayisi and workshops that equip students with essential reporting skills. Additionally, IRIS NRC administers the nationally renowned/recognized publication, Journal of Undergraduate International Studies (JUIS) and partners with the Dutch NGO Release Peace Magazine, further supporting students in publishing their work.
These efforts foster critical thinking about global news production, support independent research and reporting, and encourage students to actively contribute to meaningful journalism.

Pulitzer Center Campus Consortium
The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is an award-winning non-profit journalism organization which engages underreported global affairs by supporting quality international journalism and unique educational and outreach programs. The Pulitzer Center is a bold initiative, in keeping with its deep ties to the family whose name for more than a century has been a watchword for journalistic independence, integrity, and courage. The Center’s educational programs provide students with perspectives on global issues, help them think critically about the creation and dissemination of news, and inspire them to become active consumers and producers of information.
The Pulitzer Center’s Campus Consortium network connects students and faculty with the most-pressing global issues of our time. The Center’s campus partnerships spark conversations across disciplines, inspire curiosity and compassion, and prepare the next generation of journalists.
The partnership has been led by IRIS NRC for over five years, with generous support from:
- Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS)
- African Studies Program
- International Division
- College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Global
As the lead partner, IRIS NRC works with the Pulitzer Center to bring journalists like Jacob Kushner, Jason Motlagh, and Erica Ayisi for visits to local schools and engaging campus events.
