Angeline Morgado (UW-Madison ’28) Presents Research on Venezuelan Diaspora at WIPCS Annual Conference

IRIS NRC Student Scholar Angeline Morgado Presents her Research on the Venezuelan Diaspora at the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies Annual Conference.

Freshman Angeline Morgado attended the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies (WIPCS) annual conference at Marquette University in early April. Angeline, aUW-Madison King Morgridge Scholar and Wisconsin International Scholar, shared her research in a paper entitled “The Venezuelan Diaspora Across the Continent: Narratives for Protection, Integration, and Representation”. Angeline’s paper focused on the narratives surrounding the Venezuelan Diaspora and how they are politically motivated and driven.

Angeline noted that attending WIPCS was “such an impactful experience for me because it truly taught me a lot about peace studies, and it fueled my desire to continue my independent research project on the Venezuelan diaspora. It was my first time presenting a conference paper and I was thrilled to be on a panel full of great scholarship on migration and refugee studies. I enjoyed the thoughtful reflection during the Q&A part of the panel on  current migration issues, and how to approach solutions”.

Angeline took particular inspiration from the research and advancement presented in the student activism projects of the Center for Peace-Making who work to create a culture of active nonviolence and by fellow UW-Madison student Claudia Liverseed’s paper on “Women as Peacemakers: Rwanda as a Case Study for Women’s Leadership in Reconciliation Processes”.

Angeline Morgado is a Political Science Major with a Gender and Women Studies Certificate. She is also taking courses towards the LACIS (Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies) major and the International Studies major. Through these academic lenses of interest, she has also become involved in the Wisconsin Union Directorate Global Connections Committee as an Associate Director of Global Outreach and Education where she works to create events that foster cultural awareness and international education, and in Wisconsin Model United Nations Club where she engages in conferences and was Vice-Chair of the Wisconsin High School Model United Nations. As for the future, Angeline is looking forward to her upcoming Fall Semester in Washington DC: “I hope to take advantage of all the opportunities available in Washington DC this next semester as I engage in the Wisconsin in Washington program and continue my research on the Venezuelan diaspora.”
